Metro Detroit’s lack of a regional transportation system has cost the region millions of residents and millions of dollars of economic opportunity. The RTA creates one funding recipient for mass transit funding to the southeast Michigan region. Historically, attempts at regional cooperation have failed due to past social/political segregation and isolation amongst counties and communities. The RTA provides a much needed infrastructure for collaboration and cooperation amongst Michigan’s most populous area. Regional transportation has been named as a long needed catalyst for economic development in southeast Michigan.
